Indications

By request from a patient I will create a short list of possible indications and contraindications for acupuncture and moxibustion treatment modalities, which in my case often also include a little ‘finishing touch’ of massage. (For a while I will not be able to do that, because I hurt my right hand …)

This list will likely change over time.

Musculoskeletal system (indications)

  • Stiff shoulders / neck
  • Low back pain
  • Pain of the knees, or other joints
  • Muscle pain
  • Strains
  • Tendinitis

Musculoskeletal system (acupuncture not helpful)

  • Bone fractures
  • Torn muscles or tendons
  • crushed tissue injuries
  • Acute bleeding / open wounds

Internal medical conditions

  • Hypertension (maybe not curative, but worth a try)
  • Diabetes (maybe not curative, but worth a try)
  • Gastrointestinal problems

Gynecology

  • Breach position
  • Induction of labor
  • Preparation for safe birth
  • Menstrual pain
  • Supporting efforts to get pregnant

Pediatrics

  • Listlessness
  • Respiratory problems (chronic)
  • Emotional balance
  • Atopic dermatitis

Neurological disorders

  • Paralysis
  • Spastic conditions
  • Cerebrovascular stroke
  • Coordination disorders

Mental problems

  • Depression
  • Stress related problems
  • Anxiety
  • Sleep disorders

Things acupuncture mostly cannot help with

  • Degenerative changes (e.g., deformation due to old age)
  • Obvious deviations from normal physical / chemical functions:
  • -> A broken bone is a change in normal anatomy. A needle placed there will NOT cause an instant miraculous healing.

Worth a try …

Personally I consider a lot of conditions generally be treated solely by Western medicine may very well worth a try. Just because the majority of physician (the medical / scientific community) do not understand certain things, does not necessarily mean these things do not work. And if you tried “other things” and they did not work, you most likely did not encounter situations or lost your life savings. Unless you engaged in exotic activities that I would not recommend either.
